What is a plant growth chamber?
A plant growth chamber is an enclosed climate chamber which generates a defined climate (temperature and humidity) and defined light conditions. In addition, a defined CO2 concentration may be useful or necessary.
In contrast to walk-in plant growth chambers (phytotrons) or greenhouses, isolated experiments can be carried out in plant growth chambers under precisely defined and reproducible conditions.

Structure and function of a plant growth chamber
Providing the basis for BINDER plant growth chambers are climate chambers from the KBF and KBF PRO series with temperature and humidity control as well as refrigerated incubators from the KB PRO series. These basic units are equipped with retrofittable LED plant light modules: The control unit is attached to the exterior using supplied fastening elements and the LED strip lights are secured in the interior of the units as required using metal clips.

Selection criteria when buying a plant growth chamber
If a plant growth chamber with humidity control is required, constant climate chambers from the KBF and KBF PRO series are available as basic units. When operated with a BINDER LED plant light module, the units regulate a temperature range from 10°C to 50°C and a relative humidity from 10% to 50% (KBF series) or 10% to 90% (KBF PRO) series.
In the process of photosynthesis in plants, CO2 from the air is converted into sugar with water and light energy. In a gas-tight climate chamber, the CO2 concentration can fall as a result, compromising plant growth. The BINDER LED plant light module is equipped with a pump that pumps the ambient air into the climate chamber at an adjustable flow rate. This ensures that the CO2 concentration of the earth’s atmosphere (0.04 vol. %) is maintained in the chamber. If an increased CO2 concentration is needed, a BINDER CO2 gassing module can be added to the plant growth chamber in order to precisely regulate the CO2 concentration in the range of 0.05 to 1.0 vol. % CO2.
With the BINDER LED plant light module, lighting scenarios that approximate natural sunlight can be generated in the climate chamber. Maximum brightness close to sunlight strength is achieved if all 16 LED strip lights are mounted next to each other.
The light module has three LED color channels that can be adjusted independently of each other: cold white, warm white, and dark red. The white color channels are similar to sunlight in their spectrum. The ratio of cold white and warm white light can be used, for example, to simulate autumnal light conditions that lead to accelerated seed formation. With the dark red channel, the plant’s phytochrome system is triggered.
The light module consists of a light control unit and 16 LED strip lights.
The light control unit is mounted on the left-hand side of the climate chamber using supplied fastening elements that can be attached to prepared fastening points on the chamber.
The LED strip lights are easy to clip in under the standard chamber racks using integrated metal clips. No tools are required. The strip lights can be repositioned for flexible placement, allowing the configuration to be altered at any time.
Power supply cables and fresh air lines are routed inside via the chamber’s large oval standard access port. Precisely fitting silicone foam plugs seal the access port.

LED light system for plants
When combined with the LED light system, our latest generation of climate chambers become plant growth chambers.
The LED light system was developed to ensure maximum flexibility. It consists of 16 LED strip lights that can be positioned individually. Each strip light contains three different LED color channels that can be controlled separately: sunlight-simulating warm white, sunlight-simulating cold white, and dark red phytochrome control light. The three color channels can be switched, dimmed, and programmed in real time independently of each other using the intuitive control unit. In addition, the system contains a twilight function and a fresh air function. The maximum irradiance (PAR) reaches sunlight strength. In contrast to the warm white light, the dark red channel is used to trigger the phytochrome system.
